Was Manchester United's last title winning squad just average?

November 29, 2023

During Manchester United's last title winning season, not many remember that Johnny Evans actually played more than captain Nemanja Vidic.

Vidic was injured for long periods and Evans stepped up, making 23 appearances to Vidic's 19.

The rest of the squad also shared games with Giggs, Anderson, Cleverley and Scholes deputising, although Carrick was the undisputed starter. Kagawa was decent in his first season and up front, Van Persie was ever present with Welbeck and Hernandez supporting Rooney.

The team usually lined up in a 4-4-1-1, with Rooney in between the lines behind Van Persie. Valencia hugged the touch line on the right with Rafael ever willing to overlap. On the left, Kagawa tended to move inside as an inverted winger, giving responsibility of the left flank to the tireless Patrice Evra. Sadly, this was as good as it got for Kagawa who failed to cement a first team place in subsequent seasons. He was never trusted with the responsibility of the central attacking midfield position, eventually leaving the club and fans with a feeling of what could have been.

In central midfield, the above average industry of Cleverley complemented the grace and pin-point passing of Michael Carrick. Cleverley would go on to have a respectable career in the Premier League and Championship, but it was indicative of the fact that Sir Alex Ferguson could mold the team to be greater than the sum of its parts.

At the back, Rio Ferdinand was still a top defender but had lost a yard of pace, forcing the backline to play deeper. Evans deputised ably for the injured Vidic, with Phil Jones also getting decent game time.

In hindsight it was an average squad with sprinkles of veteran talent, and Sir Alex Ferguson squeezed out one last dance to win the title. This momentus achievement was only made apparent the following season when Moyes failed to commandeer the same group of players to any success.

It has been 10 years and counting since the Old Trafford faithful have tasted a league title, and the wait continues for the foreseeable future with the squad seemingly in perpetual rebuilding.
